How to answer 'Tell me about yourself' without going blank

It is the most common interview opener and one of the most badly handled. Most people either ramble through their whole work history, or freeze because they have not prepared. Neither is a good start.

Here is the thing: this question is not really asking about you as a person. It is asking you to give the interviewer context so the conversation has somewhere to go. They want to hear the version of you that is relevant to this specific job.

A structure that works: three parts

Where you have been: a sentence or two on your background, enough to set context. Not every job, just the relevant arc. "I have spent the last six years in marketing, mostly in B2B tech companies, working across content and demand generation."

Where you are now: what you do currently and what you have got good at. "For the past two years I have been running a small team, and I have become fairly specialised in pipeline attribution and campaign measurement."

Why you are here: this is the part people skip, and it is the part that matters most. "I am looking for something where I can work at a bigger scale and with more data. This role stood out because of the volume of campaigns you run and because you have a proper data team." That last part shows you actually looked at the job and thought about it.

Two things to avoid

• Do not start with "I was born in..." or "Since I was young I have always been passionate about..." It sounds performed, and it wastes everyone's time.
• Do not end with "So that's me!" It signals you have run out of things to say and hands the awkwardness back to them.

Practice it out loud

Not in your head. Out loud, so you know how long it actually takes and where you stumble. Once or twice is enough. You want it to sound natural, not rehearsed. The goal is under two minutes, flowing naturally into their follow-up questions, and clearly demonstrating that you are here for a reason.
